The bitter truth is best served straight — no milk, no cream, and the unfiltered reality of your situation set to a timeless Americana track.

Wyatt Thomson has been a travelin’ singer-songwriter in the Chippewa Valley for about a decade, making a name for himself at local songwriter nights and open mic performances. His unique deep vocal timbre, mixed with a love for classic bluegrass/folk music, has carved him a unique niche in the local music community. While he has been writing original music for years but hasn’t released any commercially available music. That all changed a few weeks back.

Thomson’s debut single, “Coffee Song,” is a tender acoustic ballad detailing his struggles with substance abuse and the challenge of finding your musical voice amid a myriad of life challenges. It’s an honest take on struggling with addiction and looking inward to find a solution to straightening out your life.

“This song is me being self-aware of the things that I was doing, and wanting to change them, but having trouble doing so,” Thomson said. “It’s a lot to do self with self-doubt, self-loathing, and regrets in reference to substance abuse. When I wrote it I wanted things to be less sugar-coated in my life, so I didn’t want any cream or sugar added to what I was experiencing.” 

The new song, released on Feb. 12, was recorded at Aviary Studios in Menomonie, a quiet recording spot nestled in the quiet wilderness of Dunn County. The instrumentation on “Coffee Song” features only Thomson’s voice and a delicately plucked acoustic guitar, staying true to his live sound and capturing the quiet intensity of the track as it was written.

“Using acoustic instruments gives the music a sense of timelessness,” Thomson said. “They can fit into any decade, any genre, and there is a lot to work with and build off of. It gives me room to change the song over time, and for anyone else to make it their own should they choose to play it.”

“Coffee Song” is the first of four singles Thompson plans on releasing over the next few months, culminating in a self-titled physical EP release later this year. He said the album is a snapshot of his life, and the hope is for the music on the record to capture the attention of his audience and help them through the struggles in their own lives.
