Bon Iver's Justin Vernon has given lots of love to the city he grew up in over the past several months – including his recent appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Apple Music’s Zane Lowe – while chatting about the band's new album SABLE, fABLE. Yesterday, Midwest Living shared about a dozen of Vernon’s favorite grub and rec spots in Eau Claire.
“I love California, I love London, but this town just does something whenever I’m back. It’s home,” Vernon told Midwest Living. “To watch it grow, through challenges, to find its own identity in my lifetime is so rewarding.

As far as music venues, Eau Claire has no shortage of ‘em, and Vernon gave some love to the Oxbow Hotel and The Lakely (516 Galloway St.,), a space he co-owns. The Eau Claire Jazz Festival – which just had a heck of a run last weekend – and Country Jam also got some love. But he’s pretty taken by new-kid-on-the-block venue and eatery, Leona’s Pizzeria (406 Galloway St.). “(Leona’s) is so, so, so legit,” he said.
Vernon also recommended The Joynt (322 Water St. – “It’s still the best bar in the entire world,” he said – and Ray’s Place (838 Water St.), plus Habitual Yoga Space (422 Water St.), Draganetti’s (3120 E. Clairemont Ave., Altoona), Seven Suns Vintage (305 S. Barstow St.), and more. Check out Midwest Living’s full writeup online.
