Eau Claire’s Lakeshore skate park is a modest-sized venue that’s persisted with a heavy-duty draw of local skaters. And even if it still feels like a fresh concept coming out of the wake of the rickety YMCA park’s closing, any local with a board in hand will assure you it’s well established in its third year. Chris Johnson, Gabe Brummett, and other dedicated members of the Eau Claire Skaters Association have now drummed up $5,000 for a more ambitious future park project that would put a more substantial skating facility in Boyd Park – this in comparison to the $1,000 raised before Eau Claire was convinced to OK Lakeshore’s construction. The third annual Lakeshore Skate Jam will be held Sunday, Sept. 6, to beef up the ECSA’s budget and showcase area talent. A number of companies have extended sponsorship for the event, including major skateboarding outlets such as Thrasher, Rolling Tree, Etnies, and Baker as well as local businesses such as The Dogg Haus and Fleet Feet. Toppers, too, will continue its traditional support by supplying pizza for those attending the event – skaters and non-skaters. The near 40 skaters who registered last year were encircled by a crowd of more than 100 people from Eau Claire and surrounding cities. The 2014 competition raised roughly $1,200, and Johnson said this year’s plan is to top those numbers. The jam runs from noon to five, and registration begins at 11:30am.
