It’s the most wonderful time of the year – for some.  For others, the twinkling lights, sparkling slight snow, and soft jazz only add to remind them of a home far away or lost.

Wyatt Thomson, a local inspired by classic and gritty country from the late ’40s and early ’50s, hones Christmas isolation in his new holiday original single titled “Christmas Time (I’m So Lonesome).” 

“A lot of people view the holidays as a warm and happy time of year, but a lot of other folks find it can be the loneliest time of year – especially without loved ones and family to share it with,” Thomson stated. With this new single, Thomson combines the sound of acoustic guitars, the banjo, steel guitar, upright bass, and the accordion for a timeless track with a modern swing. “People can expect to hear a new Christmas song done in a classic style, that feels nostalgic, relatable, and hopefully timeless. A melancholy story for all the lonely folks at Christmas sung with a happy melody.” 

Releasing ahead of his EP slated for 2023, Thomson expands on the homey vibes of Philville Records with the roaming cats and friendly musicians looking to experiment with new ideas, sounds, and talents. “I’m putting a lot more effort, time, and thought into this next group of songs,” he said. 

Dawson Redenius, an Eau Claire native, played the trumpet on the single for an extra emphasis on muted Christmas style. Other players on the single are all close buddies as well, with Ben Nelson and Jerod Kaszynski from Driftless Revelers on banjo and bass respectively, Matt Sayles on steel guitar, and Mark Johnson on the accordion.

Join the release party for “Christmas Time (I’m So Lonesome)” with Thomson on Dec. 22 at the Firehouse, 7-10pm. Driftless Revelers will also play their last show of 2022 with some holiday tunes for all to enjoy.
