“The Blind Patriot” (2022) 96” x 72” • Spray paint and acrylic on panel by Riivo Kruuk • From the artist: “This piece is inspired by one of the first sketches created for my first solo show, ‘Kalevipoeg,’ that was shown back in April 2022. It is a self portrait as well as a portrait of Estonia. For the last two years I have been learning so much about Estonia, its culture, folklore, traditional wear and embroidery – the list goes on. I felt almost overwhelmed by it, as if I was making up for two decades worth of not growing up there. This piece also alludes to Estonia’s resilience throughout its history through the use of graffiti, a guerrilla artform that has been a medium to express social change, protest, and be the voice of a community.”
