ROCK ON, WISCONSIN: Applications Open for Youth Music Competition
Wisconsin’s coolest competition is on the hunt for new talent
Back for its 19th year, Rockonsin is looking for the best talent from young bands. This nonprofit organization, founded by Dennis Graham, is arguably the state’s most rewarding opportunity for bands in grades 7-12.
Graham comes from a long musical background, and it’s no secret that he’s proud to be a part of the program. “It’s the only (competition like this) in the nation,” he said. “You can’t find this anywhere else.”
With their free applications open, there’s bound to be plenty of talent to be shared, making the selection process anything but an easy task. Ten finalists will be chosen to compete and perform at Summerfest this June in Milwaukee, and youth musicians in the Chippewa Valley have a history of competing well in Rockonsin, including Chippewa Falls bands Conrad & the Comrades and Ember Sky, as well as Eau Claire-based band Through The Kitchen Hole.
The winning and runner-up bands will each receive a 40-minute set at Summerfest and will both get recording time at Blast House Studios in Madison.
After almost 20 years, Graham has no intentions of ending Rockonsin. “The energy of these musicians keeps me coming back,” he said. “It’s really about encouraging and promoting them through this experience.”
Think your band could win? Applications are open until April 30 and all it takes is some music and a dash of authenticity. Who knows? You might just perform at Summerfest!
