“Green School Chair” by Suzanne Cranston

Sue Cranston is a mother of three and lives in River Falls, Wisconsin with her husband Joe. Sue is a high school art teacher at Cretin-Derham Hall school in St. Paul, Minnesota where she teaches drawing, painting, and printmaking courses to students grade 9-12.

“Green School Chair” (2019) • Digital design created from an original monotype   From the artist: “My art making is nearly always guided by documenting details that reflect objects of my youth. I’m also a high school art teacher so often times my ideas are centered around the theme of ‘school’ and ‘student life.’ Currently, I am expanding on a body of work that is all about the ‘American School Girl.’ This is a series of acrylic and mixed-media paintings, collages, relief prints, digitally created artwork, “lunch tray” art and deconstructed/embellished vintage school furniture that represents childhood experiences from a young girl’s perspective.

Many of my paintings are grouped in themed series such as ‘Know Your Roots’ vegetable series, farm animals, items from my childhood such as trikes, roller skates, school chairs, and many portraits of children. I am particularly fond of painting portraits of Brownies and Girl Scouts!

My art is represented by The Stillwater Art Guild gallery in Stillwater, Minnesota, and The Cream of the Crop gallery which is featured at the annual Minnesota State Fair in the West End Market.”
