E.C. Beer Queen’s Historic Home Now on the Market
Victorian-era house built for Walter Brewery’s co-owner could be yours
Built in 1897, this uniquely beautiful house at 527 N. Barstow St., Eau Claire, is now on the market. With four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 3,286 square feet, the historic home is listed for $395,000, which some might consider a bargain considering its old-time charm and deep-rooted history in Eau Claire.
The Christina Eichert House – which is designated as a city, state, and national landmark property –is an example of Queen Anne-style Victorian architecture with a stone foundation and three stories. The home is clapboard and shingle-sided with a truncated hip roof that is intersected by gables. Possibly the most eye-catching component of the exterior is the corner octagonal tower, which was popular in the late 19th century.
Entering the home will land you right back into that time period – minus the Victorian plumbing and electrical systems; those were upgraded in 1999. The banisters include intricate wood detailing which also makes an appearance throughout the house on the windows, the many built-ins, and the porch that wraps around the front and side. Right next to the stairs is a stunning coal-burning fireplace – which is one of three within the home.
The third and top floor is completely unfinished with eight-foot ceilings, allowing for its next owners to add their own flair to the space. But much flair can already be found on the walls of the house, with brightly colored wallpapers and paint throughout as well as the original hardwood floors.
According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the house was first owned by Christina Eichert, who had it built to be nearly identical to – but slightly smaller than – the house owned by her brother, John Walter, who lived at 605 N. Barstow St. If the name Walter rings a bell, it’s because it was the name of a historic brewery in Eau Claire: The Walter Brewing Co. once stood a few blocks away at the corner of Elm and Barstow streets. In fact, siblings John and Christina were partners in the brewery. Unfortunately, Christina only lived in the house for about a year before passing away from a heart attack at the age of 38.
