What was originally a project to provide the guests of the Community Haven House a way to express themselves through creative practice has turned into a full fledged art exhibit held at Eau Claire’s local public library.

“More Than Homeless” is an art exhibit in collaboration with the Community Haven House, a day shelter at 412 Washington St., showcasing art from their guests. The exhibit will be held at L.E Phillips Memorial Public Library in the Community Display space from Oct. 7-Nov. 8. A full program event will be held in honor of the exhibit on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 3:30-5pm, formally starting at 3:45pm. This event will feature Linnea George, a harpist, as well as refreshments.

Dan Ingersoll, a retired art teacher and volunteer at Community Haven House, worked to create three murals – “Peace,” “Love,” and “Understanding” – with 27 Community Haven House guests. The titles and inspirations of the murals came to Ingersoll when he was listening to the song, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” by Nick Lowe.

“When people are labeled, their individual stories, life experiences, and potential contributions to the community are lost,” Ingersoll said. The goal of the art exhibit is to bridge the gap between the housed and unhoused communities, showcasing the former’s often silenced voices and contributions to the community.

Birdhouses – made by Community Haven House guests – and handcrafted ceramic Haven House mugs will be available to purchase with cash or check at the exhibit, with proceeds going to Community Haven House. These funds will help the organization prepare for the upcoming cold season – aiding them to extend their hours, providing a warm and safe space for those who need it.
