“Doug’s Digs” (2023) 14” x 11” Colored pencil, ink, and graphite by Janice Roberts • From the artist: “I am intrigued with the beauty of machine parts. They become novel sculptures in their own right. By cropping away all but the essential visual information, it becomes less about the tractor as a whole and more about artistic composition. I love to create textures and experiment with different mark-making techniques and media combinations. Pairing traditional inking methods with washes of watercolor, coffee, dissolved colored pencil marks, or handmade walnut ink achieves different desired effects. Ink allows for details and wispy lines that are difficult to achieve with other media. Creating darker values with tightly packed pen strokes adds interest and sets my work apart.
