“Cocktail Hour” (2024) • 12” x 18” • Watercolor pencil and mixed media by Renee Ewer •  From the artist: “ ‘Cocktail Hour’ originated as part of an art challenge I’ve been doing every October since 2021, called Frogtober. The premise of Frogtober is simple: my inspiration can come from anywhere – film media, memes, nerd culture, etc. – with the goal of creating one new piece of frog-related art each day for 31 days. For this piece, I wanted to push my skills and play with light and reflections within glass and liquids. I started with micron pen line art on watercolor paper, and then layered in the colors and texture for the background. The frogs were painted last, to reduce the risk of the greens bleeding together with the orange background. Acrylic paints finished the highlights on the glass and shadow.” ”

Volume One finds its cover art in a number of ways, from local art shows to random emails to knowing someone who knows someone who knows a great artist. The art always originates from a current or former Chippewa Valley resident. If you'd like to submit cover art, send us a message.
