Sometimes all it takes to make a dark subject easier to bare is to dress it up in killer melodies and sexy grooves. Motherwind, an increasingly popular rock quartet formed in Eau Claire, recently released their latest single “Pull It Back.” The three-minute disco beat laden rock song focuses on someone who is struggling with their mental health, and the effect that has on the ones that love them most. While the lyrical content is darker than much of their discography, the musical accompaniment is some of the brightest they’ve recorded yet.

“Our sound never stays the same,” lead singer Anthony Frey said. “It is a moving target. We never set out to write something in any particular style, we just let the songs come to us and put out what we think sounds good. And right now, we are in the era of groovy, sexy Motherwind.”

Over the past few years, Motherwind – made up of vocalist and guitarist Frey, lead guitarist Nate Rogers, bass player Michael Hargens, and drummer Jackson Kleingartner – has steadily grown their fan base, playing over 60 shows in 2024 throughout the country (including last summer's Rock Fest in Cadott). Most notably, they’ve  consistently played in larger area markets like Madison and Minneapolis, helping them extend their reach and bring their music to new ears with each show.

With their new single “Pull It Back” out in the world, and a new EP on the way this spring, Motherwind are poised to continue bolstering the Chippewa Valley music scene and beyond. Their blend of hard rock, pop, and dance elements are proving to be something area listeners yearn for, and with Motherwind's electric live performances, will continue to be for years to come.

“One thing that sets us apart from other bands is that there is no negotiating on whether or not we are going to keep playing music together,” Frey said. “It’s ride or die baby. Tell all of your friends that Motherwind isn’t stopping ever. We’re best friends, so, sorry. You’re going to have Motherwind for the rest of your life.”
