Rusty Volk, long-time executive director of Chippewa Falls' Northern Wisconsin State Fair (NWSF), will officially retire on Jan. 1, 2026. After 17 years serving the Fair Association – during which he lead the fairgrounds' hefty infrastructure and facilities redevelopment, further elevated its variety of events and staple summertime fair, and championed agriculture education – Rusty said he is looking forward to his continued involvement in the community during retirement.
"It has been an absolute pleasure to serve the Northern Wisconsin State Fair Association, Chippewa Falls community, International Association of Fair and Expositions, Wisconsin Association of Fairs, and all the service organizations in Chippewa Falls who utilize the fairgounds to attain their missions," Volk said in a March 6 media release.
Fair Association President Jim Koehler noted while it is hard to see Volk retire, he goes with a congratulatory farewell for all he has accomplished. Koehler pointed to the improved grandstand and stadium seating; new restrooms; asphalted roads; updated electrical systems; and recently completed agricultural campus, as some of Volk's prominent accomplishments.
"We and the entire community will miss his passion for the fair and vibrant personality. ... He is leaving the NWSF in a better position than when he arrived, but also in a good position moving forward with his replacement's new vision and strategy," Debbie Baier, NWSF staffer, said. "Rusty, we will remember your energetic "good morning" each day with a smile and gratitude."
The Fair Association is now seeking NWSF's next executive director, an application now available for the role online. The NWSF, which welcomes over 100,000 attendees each year, celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2023. The fairgrounds are also host to Chippewa Falls' Oktoberfest, SpringFest, Chippewa Falls' National Night Out, and more events.
