Joe Maurer is watching ideas in his head talk back once drawn on paper. It’s a good not-normal thing.
“Smit Family Farm in the Rain” (2024) • Oil, Wax on Wood with Ephemera • Joe Maurer • From artist: “I catch myself judging too early, before the idea has had time to unfold. The thing is, experiencing ideas in my head and watching them change once on paper is often a disorienting experience. Expectation often leads to stinkin’ thinking: 'this can only amount to disappointment’ — expectations on how something should look versus what actually emerges. There is no need to prevent art from having a mind of its own. When we hold too tightly to what we think an idea should be, we can be doing ourselves a disservice. How do you overcome hesitation in your own creative process? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Find me here: joeart.org”
