Eau Claire, often referred to as the Kubb Capital of North America, has hosted the U.S. National Kubb Championship for almost two decades, hosting nationally-recognized players, just-for-fun groups, and emerging talents alike – all competing head-to-head.
The fall of a king in kubb often marks the rise of a new champion, as both players and local filmmakers B.J. Hollars and Steve Dayton attest to in their forthcoming documentary, Kings of Kubb.
Over the past year, the filmmaking duo has documented the experiences of four competitive kubb players — and their respective teams — as they each strive for the title of U.S. National Kubb Champions.

Kings of Kubb explores the history of kubb, a sport with influences tracing back to the Vikings, and follows the year-round training and anticipation leading up to the national championship hosted in Eau Claire.
“As the competition intensifies, real-world struggles off the pitch reveal a story of legacy, rivalry, and the fine line between friendship and ambition,” the Fireside Productions webpage reads.
Hollars and Dayton's film will recount the evolution of the sport — revealing kubb's progression from an afternoon pastime to an internationally acclaimed contest and profession; The duo shared a teaser trailer for the documentary on Tuesday, April 29, online.
"(Eau Claire) is the Lambeau Field of kubb; it is literally the U.S. homeland of kubb," kubb enthusiast Drew Brandenburg says in the trailer. "I know we have built something here in Eau Claire that people want to come here (for)."
Fireside Productions is seeking sponsorships and donations of any amount to support the production and release of Kings of Kubb, slated to release within the next year. Details regarding donor perks will soon be shared on Fireside Productions' social media channels, the teaser post stated.
