The folks who built what is now the Dells Mill Museum and Store (E18855 Co. Rd. V, Augusta) may have needed a covered wagon to get here, but now, you can just use US-12 and County V!
The Augusta spot is scenic, and certainly one of the Chippewa Valley's hidden gems. You might have even seen photography of the bridge, dam, and water wheel combo online or in a Wisconsin photography blog.
The original mill was built in 1864, near the end of the Civil War — back when Wisconsin had only been a state for 16 years. The mill was bought in 1894 by the Clark family, who owned it up until 2019 when it was purchased by Herman Borntreger and restored.
The water wheel, which ceased operations in 1919, has since been replaced with a hand-crafted, roughly 20-foot locust wood wheel which once again mills grains for sale. Inside this history museum, you can actually find the former turbine mill — now over a century old — that the Clark family replaced the original wheel with.
Plus, guests of the museum can find other farming implements, old machinery, and other historical memorabilia from the mills.

If you head to the Dells Mill Museum and Store when their farm store is open, you're in for a real treat. Guests can find antiques, lawn decor, and other creations. Its Amish bakery sells an impressive array of bagged grains, produce, sundries, preserved food items like pickles, and baked goods.
You'll find syrups, jams, jellies, pies, breads, cookies, and other sweet treats. In my case, the blueberry pie alone was worth the trip.
If you're especially lucky, you might catch the owners when they've got a limited supply of fresh eggs for $2.50/dozen.
The Dells Mill Museum and Store also offers tours, so you can learn plenty more about it's history and the owners while you're there.
But plan your trip with advance — the farm store is only open on Friday and Saturday from 9am-5pm from April 31 to Oct. 31. In the colder months, they're only open from 9am-3pm on Saturdays.
