“The Restricted Section” (20253 • 12" x 16" • Digital illustration by Alexia Folkman. From the artist: "The Restricted Section illuminates an austere and unsettling reality where books — and the knowledge, stories, and perspectives inside — are pulled from shelves and removed from sight. The reality is, book bans aren’t fiction and have been on the rise. As a student, when creating this piece, the discourse around this topic was especially interesting and relevant to me. So, after receiving a public awareness campaign assignment in illustration class, I chose book bans as my topic and created this illustration as a result. I love exploring storytelling and world-building in the work I create, and in this project, I enjoyed using color, shape, and texture to bring the issue of book bans to light and encourage consideration of its consequences."
