free-wheelin' discussions with local folks

If you have browsed through the aisles of Eau Claire, and the Chippewa Valley's, sole cooperative grocer over the years, you likely have been greeted by the warm smile and cheerful charisma of Jonathan Hefty. Born and raised in Chippewa Falls — now calling the city of Eau Claire home — he is the "captain" (assistant manager) of Customer Services at the Menomonie Market Food Co-op (206 N. Barstow St.) in Eau Claire. Whether he's ringing up customers' locally sourced goods at the co-op or spending his free time dining at area restaurants and breweries, Jonathan embodies the truest sense of "supporting local," in his day-to-day life.

What's the best part of living in the Chippewa Valley?

My favorite part of living in the Chippewa Valley is the easy access to wonderful local products. We can get a crazy number of things locally in our area, from local produce to great local breweries!

What place in town considers you a "regular"?

I would say my currently most stopped at place in town is Shanghai Bistro (2930 Craig Rd., Eau Claire). It's convenient walking distance from my apartment and they have great drunken noodles!

You're on your deathbed and get one last meal from a local joint. What is it?

My favorite all time restaurant has got to be Muang Thai! Such great food with friendly staff! My absolute favorite dish there is their Curry Pad Thai, a wonderfully tasty comfort food!

When someone is visiting from out of town, what's the first thing you recommend?

I would take them on a hike down the downtown river trial. After that we would have to stop at the Brewing Projekt (1807 N. Oxford Ave., Eau Claire) for the tasty beer and wonderful atmosphere!

Do you have a favorite local festival (arts, music, etc.) and why?

I would have to say Blue Ox Music Festival! Such a beautiful location with lots of great local bands.

If you could snap your fingers and see one new business open in town, what would it be?

I'd love see a meadery open up here! I've always been a fan of the mead in general, but it's pretty rare to find a nice local place that makes it.

What's your favorite public art piece in the area?

I grew up in Chippewa Falls, so I've always had a soft spot for the Wagner St. Mural. Its a mural that depicts the history of Chippewa and I loved driving by it as a child.

It's a Saturday and you're out in the Chippewa Valley. Where might we find you?

My perfect Saturday would be me and my friends holed up for an epic day of Dungeons and Dragons!

What Chippewa Valley place (or thing) is no longer around that you wish still existed?

There used to be a bakery called The French Confection that had the BEST mourning buns and hot chocolate. Absolutely decadent!

You're taking a long stroll in the woods, a twig snaps behind you, you turn your head, what do you see?

Fingers crossed it's a big friendly dog looking for some pets!
