MOST 16 YEAR OLDS LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING THEIR DRIVER’S LICENSE OR POTENTIALLY PICKING UP A JOB FOR EXTRA CASH.
This Chippewa Falls High School student has his eye set on something a little more out of the ordinary. After all, he already has a couple of under-18 mixed martial arts world championship titles under his belt!
Taking up MMA at the age of 10 after a stint in karate, Max’s skills quickly formed – and skyrocketed. The 16-year-old world champ has spent five or six days a week training for the past two years and holds a 70-4 record in competition.
Sponsored by several local businesses ranging from construction and auto companies to Athletic Wellness, Max said it’s a bit odd to be recognized by people who have seen him on the news or keep up with youth MMA, but he remains humble and eager for the future.
“I don’t feel like I’m all that, or anything,” Max said. “I’m successful and I’m grateful.”
After the school day, Max heads home for a snack before driving to Eau Claire to train at Ronin Fitness, where he also teaches an adult kickboxing-style class twice a week. Most nights, he is at Ronin from about 5-9pm, then drives home, eats a meal, showers, and hits the hay before doing it all over again the next day.
“I get a little cranky if I go a couple of days without going to the gym,” Max said. “I don’t consider myself violent, it’s just that I enjoy this sport and it happens to be one where you spar and fight.”
The end goal? Be the best. “The dream is definitely fighting for the best organization in the world, and if the UFC is still that when I’m old enough (to enter), I want to fight in the UFC. I just want to fight with the best,” Max said.
