The City of Altoona celebrated the arrival of fall on Saturday, Sept. 28, with its River Prairie Ginormous Pumpkin Festival. The free annual event drew community members together to check out the fall-themed artist market, take part in the Great Pumpkin 5K run/walk, participate in games and contests, and of course, check out the ginormous pumpkins.

The usual highlight has been the Ginormous Pumpkin Drop event (which is exactly what it sounds like!) and while the drop certainly drew a crowd once again this year – which you can see in this video – the Festival Weigh-Off ended up being one for the record books – literally. Jim Ford’s 2,551-pound Atlantic Giant pumpkin not only broke the festival record, but now holds the Wisconsin state record. Of the 10 pumpkins competing in the Festival Weigh-Off in the Giant Pumpkin category, five weighed more than 2,000 pounds!
