Just ahead of the Altoona container park’s opening this Saturday, July 26, the City of Altoona announced another significant change to its downtown: part of it is now a DORA District.
DORA – which stands for Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area – status allows folks to purchase alcoholic beverages and walk around while enjoying ‘em. Having an open-container adult beverage – bought from a participating downtown Altoona business – will be allowed within a clearly marked area at and around The Yard.
Altoona’s DORA District will be open daily from 11am-10pm (unless announced otherwise for special events) and covers The Yard’s block and the adjacent block to the west.
Beyond The Yard’s businesses – Ne-Ne's Tacos, Borsch House, Coulee Boutique, Beast + Bonito, and Iron Horse Pub – the Golden Spike Bar & Grill and Four Hundred Club are also included in the DORA District. No alcohol purchased from any other place is included in the new social district.
“The establishment of the DORA District is intended to enhance community engagement and economic vitality within Downtown Altoona by creating a flexible and safe public environment for social gatherings,” a July 10 Altoona City Council summary packet states.
While the new Altoona district is a first for the Chippewa Valley, several other Wisconsin cities including Oshkosh, Sheboygan, and Manitowac already have them.
And yes, all other alcohol-related laws still apply within the DORA District. You must be 21-plus years old to consume alcohol, drinking and driving is prohibited, etc. Be smart out there, folks!
The Yard’s July 26 grand opening will include hours of live music, inflatables, mini golf, balloon artists, a sand volleyball tournament, and more.
