The three-floor Colonial Revival style home at 1328 Wilson St., Eau Claire, has been standing for just over 120 years. Now, the seven-bed, seven-bath house is looking for its next owners, on sale for $1,105,000 through Donnellan Real Estate.

Built in 1905 by Delos and Bertha Moon, this elegant home may have been erected with lumber industry money, but it has also been a house of religion and of big-screen purveyors.

Delos Moon Sr., the Moon patriarch, co-founded the Northwestern Lumber Company in 1873. Upon his passing in 1898, his wealth almost certainly passed onto his sons, Sumner “Jack” and Delos Moon Jr.

In the first few years following the patriarch’s passing, both Sumner and Delos built their homes in Eau Claire – both of which are recognized as historic landmarks by the City of Eau Claire.

The Delos Moon house, as recounted by the Chippewa Valley Museum, has lived many lives over the past century. For over 15 years, beginning in 1948, the property became St. Bede’s Priory – home to over 100 Sisters of St. Benedict at one point.

“What had once been the family’s living room became the sisters’ chapel,” the Museum shared online.

Later, the East Hill neighborhood home was owned by the Grengs family. The Grengs are best known in the wider Eau Claire area for their local movie theater efforts. The Chippewa Valley Museum noted that, from 1940 to 2010, the Grengs had owned and operated a number of theaters: the Downtown Hollywood III, Downtown Cinema I & II, London Square Cinema and the Gemini Drive-In.

Today, the Delos Moon House sprawls 7,294 square feet and sits on a private one-acre lot. In side-by-side photos, the home retains much of its original character, with a 44-foot covered front porch and classic entry and foyer.

Inside, plenty of that elegance remains on display, with modern updates throughout. A chef’s kitchen includes double ovens and “butler’s pantry,” with an adjoining mudroom, with the first floor’s nine-foot ceilings adding to its atmosphere.

The second and third floors feature bedrooms and the primary suite, another living room and restroom. The finished lower level includes a rec or theater room, fitness room, laundry room, a wine cellar and separate stairway connecting to the three-port garage.

As of Thursday, Aug. 20, the Delos Moon House is still on sale and offering tours via appointment.
