Known for his pioneering efforts in the high performance computer tech industry, Seymour Cray Jr. invented the first true "supercomputer" in his hometown of Chippewa Falls. On Sunday, Sept. 28, local museums Chippewa Falls Museum of Industry and Technology (CFMIT) and the Chippewa Area History Center (CAHC) held a dual event to celebrate what would have been Cray's 100th birthday.
Both museums offered Cray-focused exhibits with CAHC hosting a roundtable Q&A with former Cray employees and colleagues in the afternoon. The exhibit-centered experience – organized in collaboration with The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, UK – also featured a special announcement: Mayor Jason Heiss declared Sept. 28 "Seymour Cray Day."
The proclamation notes Cray's roots in Chippewa Falls and lifetime achievements in science, security, and technological advancements as well as the positive economic impact Cray Research made on Chippewa Falls.
While Volume One detailed a snippet of information about Cray and Cray Research, Inc. earlier this month, folks interested in learning more can visit CFMIT or reach out to the local museums for more information.
