A Free Fishing Weekend event hosted by the Chippewa Family YMCA, Chippewa Rod and Gun Club, and the DNR will take place Jan. 20, from 1-3 pm on the Glen Loch Lake Reservoir directly below Ojibwe Golf and Bowling in Chippewa Falls. This event is free, with no fishing license of any kind required, and is offered as part of a statewide drive by the DNR to encourage fishing throughout the state. On Free Fishing Weekends, folks can fish almost anywhere in Wisconsin (other than some spring trout ponds) without a license or trout stamp. Seasonal restrictions and regulations still apply. Free Fishing Weekends are always held the third full weekend in January and the first full weekend in June. In 2018 the events will be held January 20–21 and June 2–3.
The upcoming event in Chippewa will include instruction by DNR wardens and volunteers from the Rod and Gun Club on how to fish and clean fish, and participants will take home a free fishing pole and jig. “No need to bring anything but a smile,” Ron Bakken of the Chippewa Rod and Gun Club said. People of all ages are encouraged to attend. Last year’s event drew more than 100 participants. “Both catch and release as well as catch and keep are encouraged,” Bakken said. “However, catch, learn how to filet, cook and sample your fish is the ultimate experience.”
