When he was a junior at Memorial High School, budding jazz pianist Tim Davis decided to get some of his musical friends of various ages together for a holiday performance. Now in its fourth year, Davis’ Christmas Extravaganza has continued to grow and is expected to feature as many as 50 musicians performing over the course of five hours on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 Roots Art and Wine in downtown Eau Claire.

The Christmas Extravaganza isn’t just a showcase of jazz, Motown, rock, and more, including Davis’ own Itty Bitty Big Band: It’s a fundraiser for Family Promise of the Chippewa Valley, which operates Beacon House, Eau Claire’s shelter for homeless families. While the event will be free, Davis and Co. will be passing the hat — and the Venmo link — in the hopes of raising $5,000.

Davis, now a sophomore at UW-Eau Claire, said he was drawn to jazz by the community of musicians who create it, so it’s only fitting that the holiday show focuses on aiding the community, too. Performers will range from teenagers to veterans who’ve toured and recorded for years. “It’s really amazing how they can lift each other up and inspire each other to grow,” Davis said of jazz musicians.
