September is Healthy Aging Month
take a breath of fresh air this fall and get a fresh start
Dunn County Aging & Disability Resource Center
As summer winds down and routines begin to shift, September offers the perfect opportunity to reflect, refresh, and re-engage – especially when it comes to your health and wellbeing. That’s why the ADRC of Dunn County is proud to recognize September as Healthy Aging Month – a time to celebrate the positive side of growing older and to encourage everyone aged 45 and up to take charge of their physical, social, emotional, and financial health.
Think it’s Too Late to “Re-invent” Yourself? Think Again.
According to Carolyn Worthington, editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging Magazine and founder of Healthy Aging Month, “It’s never too late to find a new career, pick up a new sport, discover a passion or hobby, or work on your health goals.” She created Healthy Aging Month more than 20 years ago to help shift the national conversation around aging – from decline to opportunity.
And the need is greater than ever. While early efforts focused primarily on Baby Boomers, Generation X has no entered the 45-plus demographic and is equally motivated to stay active and engaged, More than 76 million Baby Boomers are over age 50, and the first of the 82.1 million Gen Xers reached that milestone back in 2015.
“Use September as your motivation to take stock of where you’ve been and where you’d like to go,” Worthington encourages.
Why September?
September naturally sparks a “fersh start” mindset. After summer’s slower pace, fall feels like the right time to reflect, re-engage, and take on new goals –much like the “back-to-school” feeling from childhood. Whether it’s signing up fo ra new class, reconnecting with friends, or getting more serious about your health, this month encourags action and self-renewal.
Reframing Aging.
Healthy Aging Month also pushes back against the myths and stereotypes surrounding aging. It’s not about slowing down – it’s about thriving. That might mean:
• Taking small steps to improve your diet or exercise routine
• Reaching out to friends or social groups for connection
• Reviewing your financial health and future planning
• Learning something new just for fun
As Worthington says, “It’s never too late to take control of your health. It’s never too late to get started.”
