Most Disappointing Thing in the Past Year

It seems the greatest disappointment for voters across the Chippewa Valley falls on the shoulders of our local and regional government: their representative for the Third Congressional District, Derrick Van Orden. Amidst the ever-changing news on Van Orden’s role in the Chippewa Valley and beyond, the City of Eau Claire’s New Wheel Tax Approval also raised disappointing feelings for voters. Eau Claire City Council ultimately voted to increase the fee to $50 — more than doubling its previous tax value. More to come in the new year, as we will see how the fee impacts residents until its end date in 2028. Finally, folks made sure to let us know that Congress Trying to Outlaw THC has become a topic of discussion, and disappointment. Today, hemp producers and consumers are on a ticking clock — but new legislation presented this January could offer more time, and hope. —Evelyn Nelson
